I'm not sure if it is a way to isolate the fundamental elements that make Diablo fun from the mechanics of free-to-play commercialization. If it is, Blizzard and NetEase have not found it. They've made a mobile Diablo game that's fast as well as enjoyable and quite generous at first. But if you spend enough time playing, there's no way to deny that the essence of the game has been cut out from the game, cut up, and given back to you piecemeal.
Diablo Immortal is not nearly much worse than a free-to play Diablo could be. It's true that the game will be raging at you at every turn with a thousand different microtransactions that come in all kinds of mysterious currencies. You'll have to grind your way to winning, particularly if you choose not to make a purchase in the game. What you will get for doing this is a weaker than the original, reheated version Diablo II's narrative.
Yet, despite all its flaws, I loved Diablo Immortal more than I disliked it. It still has all the aspects that make this series great, from its action-packed gameplay, infinite character customization as well as its strong sense of setting, and its constant stream of new and interesting loot. It's true that Diablo Immortal even has several clever gameplay tricks which I hope Blizzard keeps in place for Diablo IV.
If you worried that F2P mechanics would undermine Diablo Immortal If so, then your concerns were justified. But if you hoped that Blizzard could offer a good mobile spinoff to fill in the time until the next big installment in the series, then you didn't hope in vain. The control scheme is somewhat different based on whether you play on either PC or mobile, however the basic concept is the identical. The player will pick up a quest in the town, go out into the wilderness, click or tap incessantly to fight enemies, occasionally activating special abilities or drinking the healing potion. The battles aren't too intense however it's enjoyable and requires a little tactical planning, particularly when you're besieged by a horde of demons, and have to deal with special cooldowns on abilities as well as a finite amount of potion.
