At 16:07 UTC on Thursday, March 11, 2021, Teresa Machan is scheduled to deliver a keynote address.

This historic but desolate stretch of Brighton's seafront will be revitalized by the construction of a new 50-meter outdoor swimming Apron Whirlpools on the city's seafront, which is scheduled to open in spring 2022.

It was announced on Wednesday that the Brighton and Hove City Council had given its approval for the construction of an Olympic-sized heated pool. Kemptown's Madeira Drive will be the site of the new development, which will be close to the historic Volk's Electric Railway and a short walk from Brighton's Palace Pier. All modes of public transportation will be able to get to it.

These past two summers, Sea Lanes have set up shop on this stretch of pebble beach to serve as a fitness hub pop-up facility. The facility includes an indoor endless-freestanding whirlpool tubs manufacturer training facility – which allows swimmers to swim against a variable current – as well as a beach cafe and bar and horse-box saunas that have been converted. Bath-based SwimTrek Adventure Tours has been providing guided open-water swims from the beach for several years, and the company will relocate its headquarters to the new beachfront pool site.

The Grade II-listed Madeira Terrace was constructed to serve as a covered promenade for tourists when the electric railway was completed in 1883. Its cast-iron seafront arches stretch from the Brighton aquarium colonnade to the site of the future pool. The terrace was closed in 2016 due to the deterioration of its 151 arches that had occurred over the previous ten years.

Having seen the success of the BA i360 attraction on Brighton's West Pier beachfront since its opening in 2016, Sea Lanes Brighton, which will operate the new development, has hoped that the  and planned street food kiosks will help to revitalize the Kemptown seafront in the same way that the BA i360 attraction has helped to revitalize the West Pier beachfront in the city of Brighton.

Earlier this year, the council approved a budget amendment that included an additional £3.65 million in cash to be used for the Madeira Terrace redevelopment.

Joe McNulty, the director of the Sea Lanes, hopes that the investment he and his team are making will shine a light on this underappreciated part of Brighton when it opens in October. We believe that the first phase of restoration, which will restore 30 arches, will begin in October this year, according to McNulty's information.
