The statement follows a report by Sports Gamers Online that EA had opted to cancel additional games with franchise-based modes in Madden 22. It was partly based on IGN's interview with Madden 22 director of production Seann Graddy mut coins. Graddy admitted that this year's plan is "slightly less ambitious than years prior" since the team is focusing on a few key areas rather than attempting to introduce items on the size of Superstar KO, a well-received arcade mode released by Madden 20.

"I would say [the roadmap is] probably slightly less ambitious than years past due to the fact that we're only focusing on a handful of parts from Madden 22 and also getting underway on Madden 23 in a big manner," Graddy said at the time. "So I'm going to stick with what we've been saying for during the past few years that we're a live service and we'll be continuing to update games, though we're not talking about a new mode."

The report received attention due to the fact that franchise mode is a thorny issue for some Madden fans. The roadmap that was promised originally came in response to the hashtag #fixmaddenfranchise, which circulated on Twitter in the middle of 2020. It was initiated following reports that EA was not planning any improvements to franchise mode that year.

Since that time, EA has released new commissioner tools and other improvements that include a major overhaul of the scouting systems.
